On a global scale, the burgeoning population and increasing urbanization rates are necessitating significant interventions in cities to address evolving needs. These needs encompass critical areas such as housing, food security, transportation, healthcare, security, economic opportunities, crisis response, and resilience. The 'Grow Line' initiative represents a proactive effort to seamlessly integrate New York City's food systems with its public infrastructure, establishing a stronger link between urban living and sustenance.

WHERE ?
Where to introduce these interventions in
New York city?

Abondoned Infrastructure. There are around 700 miles of unused spaces under and/or over elevated and/or abandoned transportation infrastructures in NYC.

Queensway is one such abandoned railroad. It runs all through, one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in NYC.

Queensway also interesects Subway and freight lines at multiple locations.

HOW ?
How do the interventions and the proposal as a whole function for
New York city?

'GROW LINE' is the comprehensive initiative, strategically situated along the dormant Queensway railroad, aimed at addressing the Urban needs.

Some key operational hubs around the railroad are chosen with a primary criterion to place interventions along the track. These hubs, typically well-known establishments like restaurants, community centers, and entertainment venues, leverage the railroad for resource cultivation. In return for the benefits derived, they adopt the railroad as their own space, actively maintaining and caring for it on a regular basis.

Considering everything as a holistic proposal, it lays the groundwork to explore more adaptable architectural and urban typologies that aim to alleviate the urban problems and propel the city's development in the right direction.

To educate and actively engage people in the proposal, especially in the farming process, a dedicated space is positioned above a couple of parking spaces on either side of the track. This experimentarium integrates farming and education alongside other public amenities.
The building serves as an educational hub, providing insights into the entire project and educating visitors about sustainable farming practices. Additionally, it accommodates spaces for various community needs, further enhancing its role as a multifunctional and informative center.
