"Machines - In & Around" is situated in Brooklyn Borough along the East River coast. It is a new typology industrial project encompassing a waste-to-energy generation plant, a recycling facility, a ferry terminal, and a nightclub.
The concept involves carefully juxtaposed prismatic masses, with their relative elevations creating ample interior spaces for accommodating the indoor programs. Additionally, these prisms generate outdoor areas such as terraces, a ferry terminal, barge terminals, and a waterfront. The expansive interior space is further organized by pairs of shear walls, extending from the foundation to the roof. These shear wall pairs not only provide structural support but also allocate space for the nightclub areas, HVAC systems, and egress routes for the nightclub spaces.

The waste-to-energy and recycling infrastructure, along with various other public programs, are strategically positioned within the space formed by the shear wall pairs and the building envelope. The night club spaces are housed within industrial metal ellipsoid structures, which are interspersed among the shear wall pairs throughout the building. This arrangement creates a network that integrates the nightclub program within and around the industrial facilities.

Many diverse interactions take place between the industrial spaces and the nightclub areas. Several ellipsoids intersect the building envelope, extending to the side, underground, and the roof, offering distinct experiences for nightclub visitors within each ellipsoid. Additionally, one ellipsoid is suspended above the cylindrical atrium, providing access to nightclub spaces at various levels. The atrium serves as a visual representation of the integration between industrial and public programs, with both infrastructures intersecting within this space.

The spatial program emphasizes the fusion of the industrial and public components within the proposal. The ellipsoids serve as prominent structures resembling massive machines amidst the WTE and recycling programs. Individuals engage in work and movement around the machinery within the industrial section, while within the nightclub section, they walk and dance within the machinery. This concept underpins the name 'Machines - In & Around', reflecting the intertwining relationship between humans and the mechanical elements.
